UPC-A to UPC-E Converter
Small packages use UPC-E, an 8-digit compressed form of UPC-A. Convert in either direction, and see whether your number can be compressed at all.
How it works
- 1Choose the direction: UPC-A to UPC-E, or back again.
- 2Enter the number. The check digit is verified or added for you.
- 3Read the result and download the UPC-E barcode.
When to use UPC-E
Use UPC-E only if the label really cannot hold a full UPC-A, and only if the number can be compressed. Retailers accept both, and most scanners read either, but the full-size code is easier to scan.
The four compression patterns
Depending on where the zeros sit, the sixth digit of the UPC-E is 0, 1, 2 (manufacturer codes ending in 000, 100, 200), 3 (ending in 00), 4 (ending in 0), or a digit from 5 to 9 (a product number of 5 to 9 with four zeros before it). This tool picks the right one.
