EAN-13 vs UPC-A
EAN-13 and UPC-A use the same bar patterns. A UPC-A is an EAN-13 whose first digit is 0, so every UPC can be written as an EAN-13 but not the other way round. Most of the world prints EAN-13, while the US and Canada still mostly print UPC-A.
Books and magazines also use EAN-13: an ISBN starting with 978 or 979 is printed as an EAN-13. Use the ISBN generator if you want the ISBN printed above the bars.
